FOOD AND AGRICULTURE

Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy, employing over 70% of the population. CERAI recognizes the critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security and promoting economic growth. To support farmers and enhance productivity, our agriculture program is designed to achieve the following key objectives:

Program Objectives,

  • Guidance on Inputs for Maximized Returns: CERAI provides farmers with tailored guidance on selecting the most effective and sustainable agricultural inputs. This includes recommendations on seeds, fertilizers, and pest control methods that maximize crop yields and ensure long-term food security, both within Uganda and beyond.
  • Research and Advocacy on Gender and Agriculture: Our program actively researches and advocates on policy issues that affect both gender and agriculture. By addressing gender disparities in access to resources, CERAI works to ensure that both men and women benefit equally from agricultural opportunities. We aim to influence policies that support gender equity in farming.
  • Mainstreaming Gender in Agriculture: CERAI is committed to institutionalizing and mainstreaming gender in the agriculture sector. We integrate gender considerations into agricultural policies, programs, and practices, ensuring that women farmers are empowered to participate fully and benefit from the agriculture sector’s growth.
  • Empowering Community Farmer Organizations: We empower community farmer organizations by equipping them with the knowledge and tools to benefit from their products. By fostering cooperative efforts and collective marketing, farmers can improve their market access, increase their earnings, and gain more control over the value of their agricultural outputs.
  • Skills Transfer in Appropriate Technologies: CERAI provides skills transfer to farmers in appropriate technologies that improve productivity, sustainability, and quality of life. These technologies include innovations in irrigation, agroecology practices, post-harvest storage, and soil conservation, helping farmers to boost their yields while reducing environmental impacts.
  • Climate-Friendly Agriculture Education: As climate change poses increasing challenges to agriculture, CERAI promotes education, awareness, and skills transfer in climate-friendly agricultural practices. We teach farmers how to adopt sustainable techniques that protect the environment while ensuring their farms remain productive in the face of changing weather patterns.

Together, we can reduce pollution, protect ecosystems, and ensure access to clean, renewable energy for all.
